The Aikido kids classes start again on 3 February. Please come to the Syndal South Primary School Hall at 4:45pm to help setup the mats.
We look forward to another great year of Aikido training with the kids, and hope that you all had a great holiday over Christmas / New Year.
We started trialling a split class last term. We are planning to split the class again this year.
What I mean by this is that we will run a senior group, and a junior group within the kids class.
The senior group of the kids class will be comprised of young people over the age of 12, or with a purple or brown belt. Access to this group will be by invitation by sensei. So, being the right age, or having the right belt is not the only thing the kids need.
The right attitude is more important.
By this, I mean that paying attention, following instructions, doing their best, and actively participating in a supportive and collaborative way with other students in the class is essential to being invited to join the senior group.
What will the senior group study?
It is my intention that the senior group will study the main syllabus that the adults study. This is the syllabus that brings the students towards grading for their black belts in Aikido. Students must be a minimum of 16 years of age to be eligible to grade for black belt. They must also demonstrate the technique and attitude of a black belt.
My hope is that the younger students in the kids class will see the senior students advancing and be inspired to be more like them. As such I am looking to raise the standard of training, technique, and attitude in the dojo.
The junior group will continue with the children’s syllabus – which covers the main technique groups – but with only one attack for each of them. ti is a reduced syllabus so that students are not overwhelmed with details, and can spend time getting a single technique right at each belt level.
I welcome any thoughts and discussion on the ideas presented in this post, and look forward to having this conversation with you.
I also look forward to seeing parents and students again at 4:45pm on Wednesday 3 February 2016 for the first Aikido Maai Kids class of 2016.
